Why not English?
It is the offical language of most countries throughout the world. -This is not the same as saying most people in the world speak English; they do not. (Most people in the world speak Chinese)
And China and Germany have progressed WITH English. English is widely spoken in Germany and in China

Because it’s the most widely spoken. This is one of the legacies of the British Empire.
What would be the point if we had 10 international business languages!? If I spoke 5 and you spoke 5 different languages we still might not be able to communicate to eachother. However, since the British Empire taught people all around the world how to speak english and now modern times of the US everyone wants/has to speak English to do international business as its the one EVERYONE knows the other person is going to know how to speak. Also, for the most part Americans only know English as compared to knowing a second language like other countries where it is common to be bilingual.
Because the word “universal” means that everone shares it. If there were 2 or more, then people would have to learn perhaps 2 non-native languages in order to communicate with the world.
China and Germany have both learned English in order to globalize. Germans are some of the best English speakers in the world. And they don’t regard it as being any big deal that they can speak it. It is just life. At the time that the world started to globalize the world wanted to do business with the worlds largest economies which were the US, and others who wanted to do trade with the US.
More people in the world speak English than any other language regardless of what that guy above said. More people speak Chinese(in its myriad of dialects) than English. But if you add the total number of English speakers including, Indians, Philipino, French, Chinese etc all of which have learned the language and some very well then you have most of the world.
Philinos whose mother tongue is often Tagalog can speak English nearly as good as someone from the States and are sometimes employed as English teachers as a “native speaker” though not often.
We need one language. Do you agree?
If a Frenchman, and a Spaniard and a Chinese are having a conversation at a hotel in Brazil, what langauge are they speaking? English of course. I have seen this situation many times.
